Predicting the 2016 Opening Day roster

Pitchers and catchers have reported and that means we’re one step closer to seeing a lot of names we’ve never heard of and jersey numbers from the high 60’s to 99 take the field during spring training games.

A lot of players with those numbers don’t necessarily make the team, and that’s not the point of this blog post. However, I will give my prediction on who will make the cut come April 3rd.

Infield (9)

Matt Adams

Matt Carpenter

Kolten Wong

Jedd Gyorko

Brandon Moss

Jhonny Peralta

Greg Garcia

Brayan Pena

Yadier Molina

Outfielders (4)

Matt Holliday

Stephen Piscotty

Randal Grichuk

Tommy Pham

Starting Pitchers (5)

Adam Wainwright

Michael Wacha

Mike Leake

Carlos Martinez

Jaime Garcia

Relievers (7)

Trevor Rosenthal

Jordan Walden

Seth Maness

Kevin Siegrist

Jonathan Broxton

Sueng-Hwan Oh

Tyler Lyons

I won’t go into detail on each guy, but there are some things that should be address with the list.

First, Yadier Molina will most likely open the season on the disabled list and won’t be on the active roster leaving room for a younger player to make the roster to start the year.

Who will that be? I think Aledmys Diaz. Who’s that? Well if you recall the Cardinals signed him a few years back when he defected from Cuba and his first two years have been blah for the most part. However, the last half of 2015 he was hitting like the Cardinals thought he would, just a lot later than expected.

Another sleeper could be Marco Gonzales, but he’s very streaky in my opinion. One could argue Lyons is the same way, but Lyons has proved he can stay healthy for the most part.

Keep it locked here to hear what I think as the Cardinals’ season unfolds.
